Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 is getting a proper upgrade for Nintendo's newer hardware. Monolith Soft's role-playing epic returns as a Nintendo Switch

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 is getting a proper upgrade for Nintendo’s newer hardware. Monolith Soft’s role-playing epic returns as a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Nintendo confirmed the plan during its June 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct. So this is not a small patch. It is a full re-release built for the new console.

Nintendo has set the digital version for July 30, 2026, with a physical version following on October 1. The move is part of a wider plan for Switch 2 Editions across the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy. You can follow official series news through Nintendo’s website.

If you still own the 2017 release, waiting makes sense. Look at what the new edition offers before you start another long trip through Alrest.

What the Switch 2 Edition Adds

The original game’s flaws matter here. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 often struggled on the first Switch. Handheld mode could look soft, and combat menus felt crowded during busy fights. The Switch 2 Edition targets those problems directly.

Nintendo says the game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second in TV mode, and full HD in handheld mode. In-game cutscenes also get better resolution and frame rate. On top of that, the studio added new content. That includes a new action battle mode where you control your Blades, a new rare Blade and Blade quest, and new equipment designs for Pyra and Mythra.

Compare this with how the Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition treated its base game. It added an epilogue and rebuilt much of the presentation. The blade-based combat system still has real depth once it clicks. So a cleaner Switch 2 version could win back players who bounced off it before.

Price, Upgrade Pack, and Torna

Nintendo prices the digital Switch 2 Edition at $69.99. If you already own the Switch version, you can buy an upgrade pack for $9.99 instead. That gives current owners a cheaper path to the improved release.

Torna owners get help too. On July 30, Nintendo will give both the digital and physical versions of Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country a free update. That update enables 4K resolution at 60 fps in TV mode and 1080p at 60 fps in handheld mode on Switch 2.

When does the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition release? Nintendo has set the digital version for July 30, 2026. The physical version follows on October 1.

Do I need the original game to play the new edition? You can buy the full Switch 2 Edition outright, or pay $9.99 for the upgrade pack if you already own the Switch version.

Is Torna included this time? Nintendo has not bundled Torna into the base edition. However, Torna: The Golden Country gets a free Switch 2 update on July 30 that adds 4K and 60 fps support.

For now, the picture is clear. Alrest is about to look and run far better than before. Whether that wins over doubters depends on how the final edition plays.
