The Xbox Age Verification Australia rollout could soon require some players to prove their age before buying certain 18+ games through the Xbox and Microsoft stores.
Microsoft says the change is being introduced to meet local regulations in Australia. Players can be prompted during sign-in or when trying to access adult-rated content, although Microsoft is also letting users complete the check early instead of waiting for the prompt.
The important part is that this does not mean every Xbox player suddenly needs to upload an ID.
Microsoft offers several verification methods, and the available options can include age estimation through a selfie, a government ID, or an approved digital identity service.
Once the check is completed, Microsoft says the verification applies to both the Microsoft account and the connected Xbox account.
Existing Games Are Not the Main Problem
One detail should make the change less worrying for current players.
According to the notice being sent to Australian users, games and content that people already own are not affected by the new purchase and access restrictions.
The change is mainly aimed at situations where someone tries to buy or access new 18+ content without having their age verified.
That still makes the rollout a fairly big change for Xbox in Australia, especially because adult-rated games are hardly unusual on the platform.
Games such as GTA Online already sit in the R18+ category in Australia, while future releases are likely to face the same rules.
For most adults, the process should only be a one-time check. The bigger question is whether players are comfortable providing extra information simply to prove they are old enough to access a game.

Australia is not the only country where Microsoft is introducing stronger age checks.
The company already supports age verification in the UK and has now added Australia, Brazil and Singapore to its list of regions where users can proactively verify their accounts.
Microsoft also says that list will continue to change depending on local laws.
That makes the Australian rollout more interesting than a one-country policy.
