The World of Warcraft Class Changes coming with the next major update are already causing concern, with Blizzard preparing another round of nerfs for several specs ahead of Midnight Season 2.
The changes are part of the upcoming Curse of Ula’tek update, which also adds new content, zones and activities. But for a lot of players, the biggest thing they will notice is what happens to their favorite class.
Some specs that have been performing too well are being brought down, while others are seeing smaller adjustments to healing, damage and cooldowns.
That means players who have spent weeks getting used to one build may find it feels quite different once the update arrives.
Several Popular Specs Are Getting Hit
Havoc Demon Hunter is among the classes seeing changes, with Blizzard cutting back some of its stronger bonuses.
Restoration Druid is also being adjusted after recent tuning pushed its healing higher than intended.
Frost Death Knight has become another major talking point. Players testing the update have already noticed large damage reductions, leading to complaints that the spec may be hit too hard.
Blizzard says the changes are based on testing and performance data, with the goal of bringing classes closer together before the new season begins.
That is always a difficult balance.
If one class stays too strong, it can quickly become the obvious choice for raids and Mythic+ groups. But if Blizzard goes too far in the other direction, players can feel punished for sticking with a class they already enjoy.
The Update Is Changing More Than Just Damage Numbers
The class nerfs are only one part of the next World of Warcraft update.
Curse of Ula’tek also brings new areas, fresh endgame content, new Delves, another Mythic+ rotation and more activities for players to work through during Season 2.
Blizzard is also trying to make combat less dependent on short burst windows.
Some specs currently feel extremely powerful during major cooldowns and much weaker once those abilities end. The new tuning aims to spread more damage across normal abilities instead.
That could make combat feel more consistent over time, even if the first reaction from players is focused on the nerfs.
For anyone who already has a favorite build ready for the new season, it may be worth checking the latest class changes before jumping in.
Your main might not play exactly the same once the update goes live.
