Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter arrives on PS5 on September 17, 2026. It comes almost exactly one year after Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter.
That short wait is not because Falcom rushed the second remake after the first one succeeded. The studio had already started making it before 1st Chapter had even launched.
Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo said the two games had overlapping development periods. Work on the sequel began during the latter half of the first game’s development.
That is the big reason players are getting the next part of Estelle and Joshua’s story so quickly. It also shows that 2nd Chapter is more than a small add-on to the first remake.
Falcom plans to release the game for PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It will be available physically and digitally on PS5.
Why Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter did not have a long wait
Kondo said Falcom could not wait for player feedback in the usual way. The teams were already working on the sequel while 1st Chapter was still on its way to players.
One major point stood out. Some players thought the first remake’s tougher fights were too easy. Falcom kept Normal Mode as it was, but made the higher difficulty settings harder for 2nd Chapter.
The team also looked at the first game’s movement options. Fast travel makes getting around easier, but Kondo said some parts of the journey need players to walk through them. Falcom kept those moments where they matter to the story.
This is not the original version of the sequel with cleaner graphics. Falcom has rebuilt the game around the newer battle system from 1st Chapter, with faster Quick Battles and turn-based Command Battles.
2nd Chapter adds more to do in quick fights. Kondo said the team wants party members to use stronger moves in the field, while enemies can use more of their battle behaviour before a Command Battle begins.
The studio is also making its hardest modes more demanding. Enforcers can use Legion Boost, which means players will need to pay closer attention to their Orbment setup.
That is a useful change for players who liked 1st Chapter but wanted more from its fights. New players can still stay on Normal Mode and focus on the story.
Our look at returning classics shows how busy the PS5 release schedule is becoming this autumn. Falcom’s fast follow-up stands out because it is continuing one story instead of starting another remake from scratch.
Falcom learned from the original split
The original Trails in the Sky was also split into two games, but for a much less comfortable reason.
Kondo said Falcom had made the first game too large and had to divide it. The team had finished about two-thirds of the planned work when the first half released.
Falcom did not promise the team it could finish the story if the first game did not sell. The team still pushed ahead because it wanted to make the second half bigger.
That choice created the famous ending that sends Estelle looking for Joshua. It also left players waiting a long time for the original second game in some places.
Falcom now knows where this story is going. Starting 2nd Chapter early means the team can spend more time on the details that change how it feels to play.
A newly released promotional video gives players a look at that bigger conflict, including Estelle’s search and the growing threat from Ouroboros. The full Kondo interview is where the more important part of the story sits.
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is not arriving quickly by accident. Falcom planned for the wait to be shorter, and players will see the result on PS5 this September.
That early work gave the sequel a big head start before 1st Chapter was even in players’ hands.
Falcom’s early work on Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter changed what players can expect from the sequel.
In short, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter had its foundations in place before the first remake launched.
