Witcher 3 Songs of the Past is bringing Geralt back with a new adventure and fresh Gwent cards, but another game with strong Witcher 3 ties is also making news. The Blood of Dawnwalker, led by former Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, will now get a 60 FPS mode on consoles after players complained about the original performance options.

The timing makes both stories interesting together. CD Projekt Red is returning to The Witcher 3 more than a decade after launch, while some of the people who helped make that game are now trying to build a new dark fantasy RPG of their own.

The Witcher 3 Is Bringing Geralt and Gwent Back

Songs of the Past is the third expansion for The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Geralt will return for a brand-new adventure when the expansion arrives in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The expansion is being made with Fool’s Theory, a studio that includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red has also confirmed that new Gwent cards will be added, giving players another reason to return to the game.

Gwent became one of the most popular side activities in The Witcher 3. Players could collect cards, challenge characters around the world and spend hours building stronger decks away from the main story.

CD Projekt Red has not yet said how many new cards will be included. Still, the fact that Gwent is getting new content shows that Songs of the Past is not only about adding another story for Geralt.

The studio is also calling Songs of the Past an expansion rather than a small DLC. CD Projekt Red normally uses the DLC name for smaller pieces of content, while expansions are much larger and include new stories, characters and several hours of gameplay.

Songs of the Past will arrive more than ten years after Blood and Wine. That makes Geralt’s return unusual, especially for a single-player RPG that first launched back in 2015.

But while CD Projekt Red is returning to an old favorite, one of The Witcher 3’s former leaders is busy building something completely new.

Dawnwalker Is Getting a 60 FPS Mode After Player Complaints

The Blood of Dawnwalker is being developed by Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by developers with experience on The Witcher series. The game is led by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who previously directed The Witcher 3.

Rebel Wolves recently showed how Dawnwalker would run on consoles, but players quickly noticed something missing. The original information mentioned a 30 FPS Quality Mode and a 40 FPS option, but there was no 60 FPS Performance Mode, even on PS5 Pro.

That caused complaints from players who wanted a smoother option for the action-heavy RPG. Rebel Wolves has now responded and confirmed that a Performance Mode targeting 60 FPS will be available on launch day for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X.

The studio says the 60 FPS mode was already being worked on when the original performance details were shared. It simply was not ready to promise that the mode would be finished in time for launch.

After seeing the reaction from players, the developers carried out more testing and decided they could get the mode ready for Day 1. Xbox Series S will still target 30 FPS rather than receiving the same 60 FPS option.

It is a useful early sign for Rebel Wolves. Dawnwalker is the studio’s first major game, and the team has already shown that it is willing to change its launch plans when players make their concerns clear.

There is also a nice connection between Dawnwalker and Songs of the Past.

One game is bringing players back to the world of The Witcher 3, while the other is being made by developers who helped create that world in the first place. Both will probably be compared with The Witcher 3, even though they are heading in very different directions.

Songs of the Past has the easier job because players already know Geralt, Gwent and the world around them. Dawnwalker has to prove that Rebel Wolves can build something new that can stand on its own.

At least on consoles, the studio has already made one change that players were asking for.
