Are you and a few friends after a good scare this month? The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is worth circling. It launches July 15 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. This is a co-op cosmic-horror game from ACE Team. That cult studio is also known for oddities like Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages. Better yet, it centers on a sanity system that makes you doubt what you are even looking at.
What is The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu?
The Mound is a co-op survival-horror adventure for up to four players. ACE Team develops it, and Nacon publishes it. It launches on July 15, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam. Cross-play works across all platforms. The Standard Edition costs $29.99, and a Deluxe edition also exists. On top of that, a free demo is already up on Steam if you want a taste. You can try it now on Steam.
The story

The game is set in the 16th century, during the age of conquistadors. First, your crew sails aboard a galleon called the Tempestad. You steer into a cursed, uncharted South American jungle. Cosmic forces have twisted the whole place. The game takes direct inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Mound.” Then you and your team hunt treasure and chart a reality-bending island. Meanwhile, ancient horrors slowly gnaw at your sanity. In short, it is a strange, striking premise, and a long way from the usual haunted-house horror.
Gameplay

Up to four players team up online, and each expedition begins by choosing a contract. Your goals are to collect treasures and identify new areas of the island. But there is a catch. The longer you stay, the more numerous and dangerous the creatures become. So every run is a tug-of-war between greed and survival. Above all, the headline mechanic is the sanity system. As your mind frays, hallucinations warp what you see. For example, a teammate might suddenly look like a monster. Similarly, solid ground might read as a deadly pit. Meanwhile, the jungle itself starts to feel alive. Combat leans defensive and avoidance-focused rather than aggressive, and inventory is limited. On top of that, proximity voice chat means you hear teammates grow louder as they get closer.
Graphics and presentation
Of course, ACE Team has always had a knack for surreal, unmistakable worlds. The Mound leans hard into that reputation. The visual design revolves around deception. The reality-warping hallucinations of the sanity system bleed into the atmospheric Lovecraftian jungle. As a result, the look keeps you uneasy. You are never quite sure whether what you see is real or a trick of a fraying mind.
Why The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is worth watching
Co-op horror is a crowded space. Still, The Mound has a genuinely fresh hook. In particular, its sanity system makes you distrust your own eyes and even your friends. On top of that, the conquistador-jungle take on Lovecraft is unusual. It also comes from a studio that always makes something strange. At $29.99 with a free demo already available, it is an easy one to try with friends. Overall, it arrives July 15 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. Similarly, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is another dark, atmospheric adventure to watch.
