The International 2026 Day 1 did not take long to remind everyone how dangerous this tournament can be. Defending champions Team Falcons were pushed to three games by LGD, while some of the other big names had a much easier start in Shanghai.
That is what makes the opening day interesting.
Nobody wins The International in their first series, but the new Swiss format gives teams very little room to sleep through the early rounds. A bad start quickly puts you on the harder side of the bracket.
Falcons nearly found that out immediately.
Falcons Had to Fight Their Way Back
Team Falcons entered Shanghai as defending champions after beating Xtreme Gaming in last year’s Grand Final.
LGD clearly did not care about that reputation.
The Chinese side took the first game and put Falcons under real pressure from the start. Instead of cruising through their opening series, the champions suddenly needed two straight wins to avoid beginning TI with a loss.
They got them.
Falcons turned the series around and won 2-1, but it was hardly the comfortable opening expected from one of the tournament favorites.
That could actually help them.
The International is full of teams capable of punishing one bad draft or one poor fight. Getting that reminder on the first day without taking a series loss is probably better than learning it later when elimination is on the line.
Elsewhere, Iron Wing had a much cleaner opening against Nigma Galaxy. They won 2-0 and moved straight into the 1-0 side of the Swiss bracket.
BoomBoys also made an early statement by beating OG 2-0, while VISION took down Team Resilience.
Those results immediately changed what the second round looked like.
Liquid and Aurora Did Not Waste Much Time
Team Liquid had a much simpler afternoon.
They beat Vici Gaming 2-0 and never allowed the Chinese qualifier to turn the series into the kind of fight LGD gave Falcons.
That is exactly the start Liquid needed.
Vici arrived at TI after earning its place through the Chinese qualifier, so playing in Shanghai gave the team a home advantage in terms of crowd support. Liquid still handled the opening series without dropping a map.
Aurora Gaming did the same against GamerLegion.
GamerLegion came into the tournament as North America’s only representative, but Aurora quickly showed the difference between reaching TI and dealing with one of its stronger international teams.
Aurora won 2-0 and moved on without the drama Falcons had to survive.
Team Spirit’s opening match with Xtreme Gaming offered a much tougher test.
That matchup carried extra weight because both organizations came into Shanghai with real expectations. Spirit took the opening game after a long fight, immediately making it one of the more competitive series of the first round.
And that is probably the biggest lesson from the opening hours of TI 2026.
The famous names are not getting free wins.
Falcons had to come from behind. Spirit found themselves in a long fight with Xtreme. Meanwhile, teams like Liquid and Aurora quietly did exactly what favorites are supposed to do.
The Swiss format will make those differences matter very quickly.
Teams that keep winning move toward direct playoff qualification. Teams that fall behind will soon find themselves playing series where one more loss can completely change their tournament.
Day 1 is only the beginning, but Shanghai has already given us the first warning.
Being a favorite at The International means very little once the games actually start.
