Team Liquid Defeat Falcons in TI 2026 after a tense 2-1 lower-bracket series, and the result has ended the defending champions’ dream of winning The International in back-to-back years.
This was much bigger than a normal elimination match. Falcons came into Shanghai as the reigning Dota 2 world champions, while Liquid were fighting to keep their own tournament alive after dropping into the lower bracket. By the end of the series, Liquid were still standing and Falcons were out.
Falcons’ Back-to-Back TI Dream Is Over
Team Falcons entered TI 2026 with a chance to do something very few teams have ever managed.They won The International last year, so another title would have put them alongside OG as one of the only teams to win TI in consecutive years.
That chance disappeared in the lower bracket. Nigma Galaxy had already pushed Falcons down after beating them 2-1 in the upper bracket. That left the defending champions with no room for another bad series.
Team Liquid were waiting for them. The match went all the way to three games, but Liquid took the deciding map and ended Falcons’ run. That means the defending champions leave TI 2026 in 7th-8th place. For a team that arrived hoping to make Dota 2 history, that is a painful way to go out.
OG’s Famous TI Record Survives Again
Falcons’ loss also keeps one of Dota 2’s most famous records alive. OG won The International in 2018 and then did it again in 2019. No other team has managed to repeat that since.
Falcons looked like a serious candidate to finally match it. They had already proven they could handle the pressure of a TI final, and they came back this year with the same core trying to defend the Aegis. Liquid stopped them before they could get close.
That makes OG’s achievement look even more impressive. Winning The International once is already incredibly difficult. Winning it again one year later, while every top team is trying to take you down, is something Dota 2 still has not seen again. Falcons are now the latest defending champions to fall short.
Cr1t May Have Just Played His Final TI
Falcons’ exit also had a much more emotional side. Andreas “Cr1t-” Nielsen said in his exit interview that this was probably his final appearance at The International.
For longtime Dota 2 fans, that is a big moment. Cr1t has been part of the top-level scene for years and has played at TI many times. For a long period of his career, the Aegis was the one major prize he could not get his hands on. That finally changed with Falcons at TI 2025. One year later, he walked out of TI 2026 after losing to Team Liquid.
If this really was his last International, at least he leaves the tournament as a former champion. That does not make the loss easier, but it gives his TI story a very different ending from the one it might have had a few years ago. He spent years chasing the Aegis.
He eventually won it. And now he may have played his final match on the biggest Dota 2 stage of all.
Team Liquid’s TI 2026 Run Is Still Alive
For Liquid, this win changes everything. Their playoff start was rough after Team Yandex swept them 2-0 and sent them straight into the lower bracket.
That put Liquid one series away from elimination. Instead of going home, they knocked out the defending champions. That is the kind of result that can completely change a team’s confidence during a tournament.
Liquid are now guaranteed a Top 6 finish and will continue their lower-bracket run against the loser of an upper-bracket match. There is still a long road ahead, but beating Falcons gives them a huge result to build on. They did not beat a struggling team. They eliminated the reigning Dota 2 world champions.
Iron Wing Are Out as Well
Falcons were not the only big team to leave TI 2026. Iron Wing were also eliminated after losing 2-1 to BoomBoys. Iron Wing took the first game, but BoomBoys fought back and won the next two to complete the reverse sweep.
That puts BoomBoys into the Top 6 and sends Iron Wing home in 7th-8th place alongside Falcons. It is a disappointing finish for Iron Wing after such a strong season. They had looked like one of the better Dota 2 teams coming into the tournament, but TI punished them at the worst possible time. Now two dangerous teams are gone, and the bracket looks much more open.
TI 2026 Suddenly Feels Wide Open
Falcons being eliminated changes the whole tournament. The defending champions are gone, and there will be a new team lifting the Aegis this year. Nigma Galaxy started Falcons’ fall by sending them into the lower bracket.
Team Liquid finished it. Now Liquid, Nigma Galaxy, Team Yandex, Team Spirit, TEAM VISION and BoomBoys are among the teams still fighting for the title. For Falcons, the dream of making back-to-back Dota 2 history is over.
For Liquid, the run continues. And if this really was Cr1t’s final TI, this 2-1 series will be remembered for much more than just who moved on.
