Sony has finally given an Official PS6 Release Date Update, but anyone hoping to hear a launch year will have to wait a little longer.
Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki says the company has not made a final decision on when its next PlayStation console will launch.
The price has not been decided either.
That does not mean the PS6 is far away or that Sony has stopped working on it. It simply means Sony is not ready to lock itself into a date while the cost of building new hardware remains difficult to predict.
One of the biggest problems right now is memory.
Prices for important components are expected to remain high, and Sony does not want to launch a new console without knowing how much it will cost to build and how much players would have to pay for it.
Sony Does Not Want to Rush the PS6
There has been plenty of talk about the PS6 arriving in 2027 or 2028.
For now, Sony is not confirming either year.
The company is still looking at the market and deciding when the right time will be to move away from the PS5 generation.
That makes sense when you look at how expensive gaming hardware has become.
Sony can build a more powerful console, but the harder question is whether people will be willing to pay for it.
The PS5 Pro already showed how sensitive players are to higher console prices. A new generation would need to offer a clear upgrade without pushing the price too far.
That gives Sony a difficult choice.
Launching earlier could mean accepting higher production costs or asking players to spend more.
Waiting longer could give component prices time to settle and also allow Sony to get more life out of the PS5.
Sony appears to be keeping both options open.
The PS5 May Have More Time Left Than People Expected
This update also makes the future of the PS5 more interesting.
The console launched in 2020, but Sony is still releasing new hardware, pushing PS5 Pro support and selling millions of games across the platform.
There is no urgent reason to replace it while players are still actively buying and using it.
A later PS6 launch could also give developers more time to move away from cross-generation development.
Many games during the first years of the PS5 were still designed around PS4 hardware. Sony will probably want the jump to PS6 to feel much clearer.
That could mean better graphics, faster hardware and new features that are difficult to do on current consoles.
But all of that comes down to price.
Sony needs to find a point where the PS6 can feel like a real next-generation machine without becoming too expensive for the people it wants to buy it.
That is why this new statement matters.
Sony is not saying the PS6 has been delayed.
It is saying the launch date has not been decided yet.
So the rumored 2027 and 2028 windows are still only rumors.
For now, PS5 owners do not need to worry about their console suddenly being replaced.
Sony is clearly thinking about what comes next, but it does not seem interested in rushing the PS6 out just to start a new generation.
