The Rust Common Ground update adds rentable apartments and shops, giving players a new way to live, trade and lose everything over missed scrap payments. The update turns rent into another survival pressure, and eviction waits for anyone who falls behind.
The main addition is the Apartment Complex, a new monument. The island’s bandits built it inside an old building. It works as a safe zone with two clear uses: player housing and trading.
What the Apartment Complex Adds
Visit the front desk and you can rent one of more than 60 furnished flats across three tiers. Every room includes a workbench, stove, bed and storage. Higher tiers give you more space, and the top tier adds extra perks.
You pay through an intercom by your door and cover a scrap deposit every 24 hours. Miss that payment and the game evicts you, along with your belongings.
The common area also has a small marketplace. Players can rent shops for scrap, list goods, adjust stock and prices, and customize a shop sign. After a set time, another player can outbid you by covering the extra upfront and hourly fees.
Bandit-run housing still carries risk. For a price, players can stake out belongings and buy a single-use master key that opens a shop or apartment. Residents can defend their property, so the safe zone only gives partial protection.
Other Additions and Community Reaction
The update also adds a glowing wallpaper pack. It includes 27 wall, floor and ceiling papers that gain an emissive glow after dark. It is a small touch, but it fits Rust’s mix of harsh survival systems and strangely cozy base design.
Reaction to the changes remains mixed. Many players criticize the new player model and call it a visual downgrade. Discussions on Reddit and Steam point to concerns about a drop in fun and ongoing technical issues.
Even so, parts of the community still praise Rust’s social and collaborative side. That debate feels familiar to players weighing whether to stick with older platforms such as PS5 instead of jumping to the next big thing.
Will missing a rent payment in Rust actually cost me my items? Yes. If you fall behind on the scrap deposit, the game evicts you and you lose access to whatever you stored in that apartment.
Can other players steal from my rented apartment? Yes. Anyone with a purchased master key can break in, and residents can fight back to defend their space.
