Sony has started putting a notice on the box of new PS5 consoles, and the PS5 disc warning sticker spells out what the company announced back in July. The wording is exact. “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.”
That is the half everyone is quoting. It is not the interesting half.
The sticker has a second sentence, and it answers the question that drove most of the anger when Sony first confirmed the 2028 plan. “Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
What the PS5 disc warning sticker actually promises
The fear that spread fastest in July was simple. People thought their shelves were about to become decoration.
That fear drove a petition past 200,000 signatures. It pulled Kojima into the conversation. It got loud enough that Sony’s CFO had to respond. And through most of it, the reassurance people wanted was never written down anywhere they could point to.
Now the box itself carries it, sitting in shops. The same notice runs down one panel in seven languages: English, Dutch, German, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
Read plainly, the notice splits into two promises. New releases stop coming on disc from January 2028. Everything already pressed keeps playing on the hardware you own. The change is to what Sony manufactures next, not to what you already bought.
Whether you find that comforting is a separate question, and a fair one. A disc that works today still depends on a console that works, and consoles do not last forever. But the specific fear, that someone would flip a switch and existing libraries would stop loading, does not match what Sony describes. It is worth being accurate about that, because the opposite claim has spread widely.
The timing says Sony settled this a while ago
Here is the part that gets less attention, and it has nothing to do with the wording.
Think about what it takes to put a sticker on a retail box. Someone signs off the text. A translator handles the other languages. A printer runs the job. Then the sticker goes onto packaging, and those units travel to warehouses and out to shops. That is months of work, not a fortnight.
Those consoles sit on shelves now. So Sony locked this in well before the July backlash, before the petition, and before the CFO said anything publicly.
None of that is a scandal. Companies plan packaging months out, and Sony announced the underlying policy openly on the PlayStation Blog on 1 July. Sony also repeated the plan on its most recent earnings call, so nothing here suggests a change of heart. But it does put the summer’s argument in perspective. By the time the petition was gathering signatures, printers were already running the boxes that explained the policy.
It is also not only a PlayStation direction. Leaked Xbox plans point the same way, which suggests the pressure is industry-wide rather than one company’s decision.
If you own a disc PS5, the practical takeaway is narrow. Your existing collection is fine according to Sony’s own notice. What changes is your ability to buy new games on disc, and that change is still more than a year out. Anyone building a physical library has time, and now has it in writing on the box rather than buried in a blog post.
