The PlayStation State of Play September 2026 turned out to be much bigger than a normal collection of trailers. Sony revealed major release dates, new PS5 games, huge updates for games already out, and even found a way to bring GTA 6 into the show.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation delivered the biggest gameplay reveal, Marvel’s Wolverine entered its final launch push, GTA 6 received official PlayStation hardware, and games like Ghost of Yōtei, Monster Hunter Wilds, Saros, Until Dawn 2 and Metro 2039 all had something new to show. Here are the biggest announcements, starting with the ones that deserve the most attention.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Finally Has a Release Date
Square Enix saved one of the biggest reveals for the end.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027, finally putting a date on the last chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The extended gameplay presentation showed Cloud and the party travelling with the Highwind, jumping from the airship to locations below and exploring areas including Wutai, Rocket Town and Gongaga.
Chocobos can now help in combat, while the new FITS system gives party members different roles. Players can also fast-forward cutscenes and let different characters take the lead during some side missions. This was easily one of the most important reveals of the entire show.
GTA 6 Got Its Own Limited-Edition PS5 Controllers
Rockstar did not bring another GTA 6 gameplay trailer, but Sony still found a way to put the biggest upcoming game in the world into State of Play. PlayStation revealed two GTA 6 Limited Edition DualSense controllers, available in black and white.
Both designs use Vice City-inspired details and GTA 6 branding. Pre-orders open September 10, with the controllers launching November 19 alongside GTA 6. It also makes Sony’s marketing relationship with GTA 6 increasingly visible even though Rockstar’s game is coming to both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Marvel’s Wolverine Is Ready for Launch
Insomniac used State of Play to release the Marvel’s Wolverine launch trailer ahead of its September 15 release on PS5. The trailer combines new combat and story scenes while showing Logan alongside Jean Grey, Mystique and Team X.
Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Sentinels and Bolivar Trask also appear. After months of deeper gameplay reveals, this felt more like Insomniac’s final reminder that Wolverine is now almost here.
Jin Sakai Is Coming Back in Ghost of Yōtei
One of the best surprises came from Ghost of Yōtei. The new Most Wanted mode launches October 1 and turns the game into a single-player combat survival challenge with different playable characters.
More importantly, Ghost of Tsushima hero Jin Sakai is playable. Players can take on waves of enemies and bosses while unlocking weapons, cosmetics and additional characters. Most Wanted arrives as part of Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition.
Monster Hunter Wilds Is Getting Much Bigger
Capcom gave Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance its first major trailer. The 2027 expansion adds a new story, monsters, Elder Dragons, another location and new combat mechanics.
Capcom also revealed more about the Skybound Eyrie area and Boost Actions. For Monster Hunter players who have already spent hundreds of hours in Wilds, Ascendance looks more like a major expansion than a small DLC pack.
Saros Is Getting New Game Plus and a Boss Rush
Housemarque also returned with a substantial free update for Saros. The Zenith update arrives later this year and adds Overlord Rush, a boss rush where players fight campaign bosses back-to-back while competing for better scores.
The bigger addition may be Eclipse Layers, Saros’ version of New Game Plus. It introduces new modifiers, progression changes and other secrets for players who have already completed the game. New accessibility options are coming too, including the ability to slow down game speed.
Until Dawn 2 Finally Has a Release Date
Sony confirmed Until Dawn 2 launches January 28, 2027 on PS5. The new trailer focuses on the ghost-hunting TV crew at the center of the sequel and again makes player choices a major part of who survives.
The story takes players back to Blackwood Sanatorium before moving to Akishima Island, giving the sequel a direct connection to the original game while opening up a new mystery.
Metro 2039 Showed PS5 Pro Gameplay
Metro 2039 got its first PS5 Pro gameplay and a release date of February 4, 2027. The footage showed another brutal trip through post-apocalyptic Moscow with exploration, gunfights, stealth and survival still at the center.
The new game follows a mysterious character known as the Stranger, giving 4A Games another chance to expand the Metro universe beyond the story players already know.
Maneater 2 Was One of the Weirdest Surprises
Yes, the shark is back. Maneater 2 was officially revealed for PS5 and is coming in 2027.
This time the man-eating bull shark finds itself inside Neptune’s Kingdom, an ultra-expensive private island and theme park filled with people, technology and other dangerous creatures. The basic idea remains wonderfully ridiculous: eat things, grow stronger and cause chaos.
Crimson Desert Is Already Expanding
Pearl Abyss revealed Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, a major expansion arriving October 15. The PS5 Pro footage showed new exploration and gameplay as Kliff, Oongka and Damiane continue their journeys.
For a game built around an already massive world, seeing a large expansion arrive so quickly makes Crimson Desert one of the more interesting long-term projects on PlayStation.
Sephiroth Is Coming to Final Fantasy Resonance
Final Fantasy fans actually got two major moments during the show. Final Fantasy Resonance revealed Sephiroth as a special boss encounter. Defeating him will unlock a special reward.
Even better, players do not have to wait until the October 22 release to try the game. The entire first chapter is available as a PS5 demo now, and save progress carries into the full game.
Gran Turismo 7 Is Getting a Huge Spec IV Update
Polyphony Digital is not finished with Gran Turismo 7. The upcoming Spec IV update will arrive in two parts across October and December, adding 12 cars and two circuits.
New modes include Online Drift Trials and Shuffle Races, while Family Mode aims to make the game easier for people with different driving skill levels to enjoy together.
The New Game Reveals Kept Coming
Sony also revealed several completely new games.
Rhapsody in Scarlet mixes magic, monsters and jazz in a supernatural version of 1920s New York. Players control spellcaster Ellie Myers alongside her magical beast companion.
Hunter’s Moon takes a completely different direction. The first-person folk horror game puts players in 17th-century England as a woman accused of witchcraft who must survive one terrifying night.
Then there is Uncanyon, the new puzzle adventure from Maquette developer Graceful Decay. Its central idea lets players manipulate and combine different realities to change the world around them.
LEGO PlayStation, Gundam and Keeper Added Even More
Sony and LEGO also revealed a 1,911-piece original PlayStation set, complete with the classic console and controller.
Gundam Rogue Orbit showed more fast combat and deep mobile suit customization while confirming a March 5, 2027 release.
Double Fine’s strange puzzle adventure Keeper also made the jump to PS5 and is available now, giving PlayStation players another former Xbox release.
Konami brought Rev. Noir back with new combat and story footage, while PlayStation Plus members learned that Mycopunk is heading to Game Catalog and classics including Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank are joining Premium.
State of Play even opened with footage from the new Resident Evil movie before moving into the games.
Not every announcement was enormous on its own, but together they made Sony’s upcoming calendar look much healthier. Final Fantasy VII Revelation, GTA 6, Wolverine, Monster Hunter, Saros, Until Dawn 2 and Metro 2039 are targeting very different audiences. That may have been the biggest message of the entire show.
PS5 suddenly has a lot happening over the next several months, and Sony just showed much of it in one morning.
