Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi Makes Blocking Cost You Offence

Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi Makes Blocking Cost You Offence

Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi pays for blocking and attacking from the same pool, so playing safe quietly costs you damage.

Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi is one meter doing two jobs, and that is what makes it interesting. It fuels your heavy attacks and your ultimate abilities. It also pays for blocking the enemy Brutal Moves. So every point you spend absorbing a big attack is a point you cannot spend hurting anything, which quietly bans the turtle strategy that carries people through most action games.

More gaming coverage is available on Insider Saga.

S-GAME Studio developed it, and the Steam page currently lists 28 October 2026. Note that some earlier reports gave a September window, so treat the date as the storefront states it.

What Phantom Blade Zero Sha-Chi pays for

Look at the two sides of the ledger separately and the intent becomes obvious.

The spending side is broad. Heavy attacks draw on it, Phantom Edge abilities draw on it, Power Surge ultimates draw on it, and blocking Brutal Moves draws on it too. Four very different actions, one shared pool.

The earning side is narrower and, importantly, aggressive. You build the resource by landing basic attacks, by nailing perfect parries, and through Ghoststep counters. Notice what is missing there. Every listed source is aggressive, so backing off does not appear to build anything.

Put those together and the loop is deliberately uncomfortable. If you block a heavy sequence, you spend. To get that back, you have to step into the next exchange rather than out of it. Consequently the safe option now carries a delayed cost.

Compare it with the usual arrangement. Many action games separate the two pools, giving you stamina for defence and a super meter for offence. Those systems let a cautious player block all day and still build towards a big move. This one refuses that. It ties your survival budget and your damage budget to the same number, so caution has a price you can actually see draining.

Colour tells you which defence to use

The game does help you read fights. Some enemy attacks are colour coded, and preview footage indicates the colour tells you the answer. Blue attacks are meant to be parried, red ones dodged. That distinction matters more than usual here, because parrying feeds your meter while dodging simply keeps you alive.

Weapon variety sits on top of all that. There are over thirty weapons and more than twenty Phantom Edges, which are secondary weapons you mix and match. Each carries its own moveset and its own Power Surge, so they behave as different fighting identities rather than stat variants.

Since the game has not launched, treat specifics as pre-release detail that can shift. The Steam store page holds the current listing, and MMORPG.com wrote a preview of how it plays.

The wider Phantom Blade Zero design points the same way. The game favours relentless offence, fluid movement and long combo chains, rather than the patient stamina management that defines a lot of soulslikes. If your instinct is to back off and breathe, expect to fight that instinct.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking really cost resource? Blocking a Brutal Move does. Sha-Chi covers that alongside heavy attacks and ultimates.

How do you refill it? Phantom Blade Zero rebuilds it through basic attacks, perfect parries and Ghoststep counters.

What is a Phantom Edge? A secondary weapon. There are more than twenty, each with its own moveset and ultimate.
