Extraction games are everywhere right now. However, Mistfall Hunter has a twist that made it one of the most talked-about demos of the year. Instead, it swaps guns for Souls-like melee combat. It launches July 29 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC, and it is free on Xbox Game Pass day one. In short, it drops you into a bleak dark-fantasy world where every loot run could be your last.
What is Mistfall Hunter?
Mistfall Hunter is a third-person PvPvE extraction action RPG. Bellring Games develops it, and Skystone Games publishes it. It launches on July 29, 2026 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Crossplay is supported, and it lands on Xbox Game Pass day one. A free open beta also ran back in June. The developers have not announced a final price yet. Still, they have promised no pay-to-win mechanics and no paid stat boosts. You can wishlist it now on Steam.
The story
The game unfolds in a grim dark-fantasy world. A strange phenomenon called the Gyldenmist grips the land. You play as the Gyldhunters, a band of exiled warriors trying to reclaim their lost glory. To do so, they venture into mist-shrouded, monster-infested zones. There they scavenge, fight and, if they are lucky, escape with their haul.
Gameplay
First, the core is a classic extraction loop. You drop into a dangerous zone and gather loot. Then you survive whatever comes for you. Finally, you try to extract before you die and lose your gear. What sets it apart is the combat. It is visceral, Souls-like melee built on skills, talents and weapon stances rather than shooting. The game is player-versus-player-versus-environment. As a result, you face both AI-controlled corrupted creatures and rival human hunters in the same session. You can go it alone as a lone wolf, or you can team up in three-player squads. On top of that, there are six distinct classes to master, from the heavy Withered Knight to the versatile Seer.
Graphics and presentation
The look is bleak, moody and deliberately oppressive. Of course, it draws constant comparisons to Dark Souls. Above all, everything about the presentation keeps you tense. That ranges from the gloomy, mist-choked environments to the weighty, deliberate feel of combat.
Why Mistfall Hunter is worth watching
Indeed, its Steam Next Fest demo won wide praise as one of the best of the event. Many pitched it as basically Dark Souls, but as PvP extraction. Perhaps you love high-stakes loot runs and melee combat. If you already have Game Pass, it costs you nothing to try. It launches July 29 on PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC. Similarly, Cyberpunk 2077 is another dark, mature hit that just passed 40 million copies.
