Marvel’s Wolverine Combat Looks Deeper Than Expected and Sabretooth Is Joining the Fight

New Marvel’s Wolverine Combat details are arriving at the perfect time. Insomniac’s new PS5 exclusive launches in just two weeks, and the studio is now showing players how Logan’s Techniques, Special Techniques, Rage and upgrades will actually work during fights.

The latest footage focuses less on simply showing blood and more on how players can control Wolverine. Logan can learn new moves, equip four powerful Special Techniques at once and change his fighting style through dozens of Adaptations.

Wolverine Has More Than Basic Claw Attacks

Insomniac has shown several Special Techniques that players can use when normal attacks are not enough.

One of them is Tornado Spin, which sends Wolverine spinning through nearby enemies with his claws. The move looks useful when Logan gets surrounded because it can hit several targets and give the player more space.

Other Special Techniques include Knee Breaker and Spiral Strike. Each one has a different purpose, which should let players build a set of attacks around how they like to fight.

Players can equip four Special Techniques at the same time.

That is important because it means Wolverine does not have one fixed combat setup. Someone who likes fighting large groups can choose different moves from a player who wants to focus on heavy damage against stronger enemies. Special Techniques also recharge, so players will need to decide when to use them rather than simply repeating the strongest attack.

Adaptations Let Players Change Their Wolverine

The combat system goes deeper with Adaptations. Insomniac says there are dozens of these upgrades across the game. They can change different parts of Logan’s abilities instead of only giving him more health or damage.

Some Adaptations can help Wolverine survive gunfire. Others improve Rage, make parries easier or change how enemies react when Logan becomes more aggressive. That should give players plenty of freedom when building Wolverine.

A player struggling with defensive timing can make parrying easier, while someone who wants to attack constantly can focus more heavily on Rage and aggressive abilities. It makes Wolverine sound much more flexible than the early trailers suggested.

Those trailers mainly sold the game through claws, blood and brutal finishers. The latest details show that Insomniac has built a proper upgrade system underneath all of that violence.

Rage Makes Logan Stronger When Things Get Worse

Wolverine’s Rage system could become one of the most important parts of combat. Logan builds Rage by attacking enemies, successfully parrying and staying aggressive. The system has three levels, with Wolverine becoming more dangerous as the meter grows. His Healing Factor also plays a role when he takes heavy damage.

That creates a very different style from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Spider-Man normally wants to dodge attacks and avoid damage, while Wolverine is built to survive punishment and keep fighting. At higher Rage levels, Logan becomes much more powerful and violent.

That fits the character perfectly. Wolverine should feel most dangerous when a fight starts getting out of control, and Insomniac appears to have built the combat around exactly that idea.

Sabretooth and Mystique Are Fighting Beside Logan Too

Insomniac is also revealing more about who will join Wolverine during some of those fights.

PlayStation recently highlighted Sabretooth and Mystique as members of Team X, meaning players will see both characters working alongside Logan during parts of the story. Sabretooth is the more surprising one.

He and Wolverine have a difficult history, and Sabretooth clearly has problems with Logan after he previously walked away from Team X. Even so, the two still fight on the same side when the group faces a bigger threat.

Mystique is also part of Team X and appears during missions with Logan. This does not turn Wolverine into a co-op game. Marvel’s Wolverine remains a single-player adventure, but Insomniac can use these allies during story missions to make fights feel larger and show more of Logan’s relationships. It is a nice extra detail, but Wolverine himself remains the focus.

Insomniac Is Using the Final Two Weeks to Show the Depth

At this point, Insomniac does not need to prove that Marvel’s Wolverine is violent. Players have already seen Logan tear through enemies, use brutal finishers and fight some of Marvel’s most dangerous characters.

The more important question before launch is whether that combat stays interesting after the first few hours. Special Techniques, dozens of Adaptations and the three-level Rage system suggest there is much more happening than the early trailers showed.

Players can change their build, experiment with different attacks and decide how aggressively they want Logan to fight. New Game Plus and Mission Replay will also give players reasons to return after finishing the story.

Sabretooth and Mystique joining Logan adds another interesting piece to the story, but the bigger reveal remains the combat itself. With only two weeks left, Insomniac is finally showing that Wolverine is not just about having sharper claws than Spider-Man. There is a much deeper fighting system underneath them.
