Marvel Tokon Crashing on PC: Fixes That Actually Work

Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Doom and Star-Lord in MARVEL Tokon Fighting Souls

MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls launches on 6th August. Marvel Tokon crashing on PC was the loudest complaint of the open beta in July, and it was broken enough that the developers put out a public apology and a list of repairs. Before you take your machine apart, start with the one thing that catches almost everybody.

Check the servers are live first

The game needs its servers. If they are down, or not open yet, it can hang, show a black screen, or drop you back to the desktop. Nothing is wrong with your PC.

ARC SYSTEM WORKS set a fixed schedule for the servers. On 6th August they open at 8:00 AM Pacific, 11:00 AM Eastern, 4:00 PM in the UK and 5:00 PM in central Europe, and midnight going into 7th August in Japan.

So anyone who pre-downloads and tries to play early hits exactly that. So check the game Steam page for server status before you change a single setting. Once you are in, our explainer on team order covers what most new players get wrong first.

What the developers already fixed

Most guides online date from the open beta in late July, not the game that shipped.

On 1st August the studio posted a note on Steam titled PC Performance Fixes Post Open Beta. Their message to PC players was blunt: “message received”.

They listed five day-one fixes. Lower CPU use. Frame rate drops and lag. Shaders compiling at startup when they did not need to. Compatibility with OBS and Discord. Rollback netcode and cross-play.

So try the game before you change anything. Several fixes still going around aim at problems the studio says are already gone.

Marvel Tokon crashing on PC: the fixes in order

Work down the list and stop when the game runs. A note on the pictures: some show a different game selected in Steam. The menus are identical whichever game you click, so the steps are the same.

Step 1. Restart your PC. It clears the stale driver and memory states behind a lot of launch-day crashes.

Step 2. Repair Windows. Open Start, type cmd, and choose Run as administrator.

Step 3. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. It checks Windows for damaged files and repairs what it finds.

Step 4. When that finishes, type DISM /Online /cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. This is a deeper repair and it is slow, so leave it alone.

Step 5. Then restart again. Press Windows and X, then Shut down or sign out, then Restart.

Step 6. Open Steam and go to your Library.

Step 7. Right click the game, choose Properties, then Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces anything broken.

Step 8. Still crashing? In Properties, on General, find Launch Options and type -dx11. If that does not help, try -dx12 instead. Test them one at a time.

Step 9. Click Steam, then Settings, then In Game, and turn off the Steam overlay. Do the same for Discord and Xbox Game Bar. Overlays hook into the game as it starts and often cause a crash to desktop.

The anti-cheat clash behind Marvel Tokon crashing on PC

If none of that works, there is one more cause. Players ran into it again and again during the beta, and no other guide mentions it.

Players in the forum thread traced their crashes to the game’s anti-cheat arguing with other software. One found it reacted to device drivers, naming wireless headsets and RGB lighting control. Another only got a stable game after closing FACEIT, Riot’s anti-cheat and the Epic Games Launcher.

So before you reinstall anything, close every other anti-cheat, shut down your RGB software, and unplug a wireless headset. It sounds ridiculous. It also worked for people who could not get five seconds into a match.

Those reports are from the beta, and the studio did not list anti-cheat among its day-one fixes, so it is the likeliest survivor. If you are still stuck, update your graphics driver and restart, then read our settings guide from another launch this month, because one or two heavy options usually cost more than all the rest combined.

The studio has said more fixes are on the way. If nothing above clears it, check the game Steam page for the newest patch notes before you reinstall anything.
