New GTA 6 jason gameplay details are giving us a much better idea of how Rockstar may handle movement and combat this time around. The latest leaked footage appears to show Jason swimming, fighting at close range and using several different items during normal gameplay.
Rockstar has not officially confirmed the footage, so some details could still change before launch. But the clips appear to come from an unfinished build of the game, and there is a lot here that looks different from GTA 5.
The biggest change may be how physical everything feels. Jason does not simply run around, pull out a gun and start shooting. The footage appears to give players more ways to fight, recover and move through the world.
Jason Can Swim, Fight and Take Visible Damage
One part of the leaked footage appears to show Jason swimming before making his way back onto land.
Swimming itself is obviously not new to GTA, but the animation gives us another look at how Jason moves outside normal missions. The transition does look rough in the leaked build, which is another reminder that this may not represent the finished game.
The fighting is much more interesting. Jason appears to get into close-range fights where knives and other melee weapons can come into play. The footage reportedly shows several blade types, including a hunting knife, switchblade and regular knife.
He also appears to suffer visible injuries during these fights. Cuts can be seen on Jason after taking damage, which could mean Rockstar wants combat to leave more visible marks on the character instead of simply lowering a health bar.
There also seem to be more combat animations than we had in GTA 5. Jason can attack from different positions, and the fights look closer to the heavier style Rockstar used in Red Dead Redemption 2. That could make street fights much less repetitive.
GTA 6 May Have a Much Deeper Health and Item System
The footage also appears to show a separate item wheel alongside the normal weapon wheel. That is a small change, but it could make a big difference. Instead of putting almost everything into one menu, GTA 6 may separate weapons from useful items such as medicine.
One healing item shown in the leak is called Zombix. Using it appears to restore health, but taking too much of it can make later doses less effective for a short time. There also appears to be an EpiPen-style healing item.
That suggests Rockstar may want players to think a little more carefully about how they recover during fights instead of instantly eating snacks from a menu. The weapon wheel itself appears to have eight weapon slots, while healing items sit separately. If that stays in the final game, GTA 6 could feel much closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 when it comes to carrying equipment.
Jason May Actually Get Better at Things You Do
Another detail from the wider leak makes all of this more interesting. Earlier footage showed Jason gaining Focus after successfully making a basketball shot. Now other reports point to a stamina meter and several systems that look more like character progression than GTA 5. That could mean activities are not only there for fun.
Playing basketball, swimming, fighting or doing other physical activities may help improve Jason in some way over time. Rockstar has done this before. GTA: San Andreas allowed CJ to improve different skills and change physically depending on what the player did. GTA 5 also had character stats, but they were much less noticeable during normal play.
GTA 6 may be bringing some of that depth back. Nothing in the leaked footage proves that Jason can completely change his body or build different fighting styles, but there are enough small clues to make character progression worth watching. If Rockstar connects stamina, Focus and physical activities together, players may have more control over how Jason develops.
Combat Could Be Much More Than Shooting This Time
GTA has always been known for guns, but the latest footage suggests Rockstar has spent a lot more time on what happens before someone pulls one out. Jason appears able to use knives, fight at close range and interact with enemies in more ways.
Other leaked clips from the same batch have also shown tasers, surrender options and the ability to pick up items from characters after a fight. That could make smaller encounters much more interesting.
A random argument on the street would not always need to turn into a gunfight. Players might have several ways to handle the situation depending on what they are carrying and how aggressive they want to be. That would also fit GTA 6’s more detailed police system.
If police remember vehicles, clothes or weapons, starting a fight could have consequences long after the first punch. Rockstar has not explained any of these systems officially yet, so there is still a lot we do not know.
But the leaks are starting to paint a clear picture. GTA 6 may not simply give Jason more animations. It may give players more control over how he moves, fights, heals and develops throughout the game.
We should get a much better idea when GTA 6: An Extended Look arrives on August 27. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
