Halo Campaign Evolved on PS5: How to Set Up Cross-Play and Your Microsoft Account

Playing Halo Campaign Evolved on PS5 needs a Microsoft account, a Gamertag and a few settings. Here is the full setup before the July 28 launch.

Halo has never launched on Sony hardware before. So playing Halo Campaign Evolved on PS5 involves one step that will feel strange to PlayStation owners. The remake reaches everyone on July 28, 2026, and Halo Studios built its cross-platform features on Xbox infrastructure. As a result, you need a Microsoft account even if you have never touched an Xbox. None of it takes long, but it does catch people out on launch day, especially anyone planning a four-player session with friends on other systems.

What Halo Campaign Evolved on PS5 asks of you

Start with the account. Halo’s official site tells players to create a Microsoft account and pick a Gamertag. Because that Gamertag is how the game finds your friends across platforms. So make it before launch rather than while three people wait in a lobby. The name you choose is the one everyone else searches for. So pick something they will recognize at a glance.

Next, check the dates. Global launch lands on July 28, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. PDT. Early access opened five days earlier, on July 23. That said, only for people who pre-ordered the Digital Premium Edition or the Collector’s Bundle. Everyone else waits for the 28th.

Game Pass matters here too, but not for you. Even so, Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass both include the game from global launch. Game Pass does not run on Sony consoles. PlayStation players buy it outright. One more platform rule applies as well: PS5 asks for PlayStation Plus before it lets you play online in almost any game. So factor that in if you plan to team up over the internet rather than on the couch.

Getting four players together across PS5, Xbox and Steam

Campaign Evolved runs four-player co-op with cross-play, and consoles keep split-screen on top of that. The combination matters more than it sounds. Two people can share your PS5 on one screen while two more drop in online from a PC or an Xbox. So you fill a fireteam without everyone owning the same box.

Adding those friends happens through Xbox rather than your PlayStation friends list. Halo’s team points players to Xbox.com, the Xbox mobile app, or the Xbox Game Bar on PC to send and accept requests. Therefore the fastest route is simple: install the Xbox app on your phone, sign in with the Microsoft account you just made, and add everyone the night before. They then show up in game.

Because the whole system runs on Gamertags, ask friends for that name and nothing else. A PSN online ID or a Steam profile name will not find anybody.

One campaign, four platforms

Cross-progression covers Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and PS5. In practice you can start a mission on PS5 and pick the same campaign back up on a PC later, as long as you sign in with the same Microsoft account. That is the clearest reason to set the account up properly at the start instead of throwing together a spare one you will forget.

A small bonus waits for you as well. Every player receives the Silver Anniversary Armor and Assault Rifle styles. Halo Studios added a Sandstone Ancient armor style for everyone after early access ran late. You do not need to claim them manually.

Finally, know what you are buying. This is a full remake built in Unreal Engine 5, not a resolution bump. It adds three bonus missions called Operation: METEORITE set roughly a year before the original story, nine more weapons pulled from later Halo games, a Campaign Remix mode, fresh Skulls, an optional third-person view, vehicle hijacking and a drivable Wraith. For a PlayStation owner meeting Master Chief for the first time, that is a generous way in.
