Rockstar has finally put a date on new Grand Theft Auto 6 footage, and the GTA 6 Extended Look arrives on Thursday 27 August. The odd part is where it lands first.
It premieres on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET. It does not reach the Rockstar Games YouTube channel or the Grand Theft Auto VI website until 9 p.m. ET the same day. So Netflix gets a six hour head start on the most anticipated footage in gaming.
There is also a detail in the name that is easy to skip. Rockstar never calls this Trailer 3.
What the GTA 6 Extended Look is, and what it is not
The official title is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. That phrasing is doing some work.
Fans have spent months waiting for something they call Trailer 3, and we have written before about how that trailer never actually arrived. Rockstar has now sidestepped the label completely. An extended look promises length rather than a two minute cut, which points more towards a proper showcase than a teaser.
But nobody outside Rockstar has seen it. There is no runtime, no confirmation that it is gameplay rather than cinematics, and no promise of a new release date inside it. Anyone telling you what is in it is guessing.
If you do not subscribe to Netflix, you lose nothing except six hours. The same footage goes up free on the studio’s own channels that evening. There is no paywall on the footage itself, only on seeing it first.
Rockstar also quietly updated its media library on 6 August with two new pieces of artwork. Both show Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos outside a gas station in a purple Vice City sunset, pulling bandanas up over their faces, a pistol at Lucia’s waist and a muscle car waiting behind them. GameRant spotted that the files carry the name robbery in Rockstar’s own library.
Why handing Netflix six hours is the real story
Think about what Rockstar is giving away here, because it is not nothing.
Grand Theft Auto trailers do not need help finding an audience. They break viewing records on their own, within hours, without a partner. Rockstar has never had to borrow anyone else’s platform to get people to watch a Grand Theft Auto video.
So a six hour exclusive is a choice rather than a necessity. It treats a game reveal like a television premiere, with a scheduled slot on a streaming service and a later window for everyone else. That is a genuinely new shape for a games marketing beat this big.
It also tells you something about how confident Rockstar is. You only hold footage back behind a partner if you are certain the audience will wait. Six hours is not a long delay, but it is long enough that the conversation starts on Netflix and everyone else joins late.
For Netflix the appeal is obvious. For a few hours on 27 August, the only legal place to watch the biggest thing in games is a subscription service. That is a lot of attention for a company that does not sell the game.
The wider picture has not changed. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently dated 19 November 2026, and talk of another delay has not gone away, with a former Rockstar developer saying a further slip would not surprise him. Publishers have already cleared out of November, which is why this autumn looks so empty around it.
None of that gets resolved on 27 August unless Rockstar chooses to address it. What we know for certain is the date, the two times, and the fact that Rockstar picked its words carefully. Everything else is worth waiting for rather than guessing at.
