Gothic Remake Learning Points vs Deus Ex Skill Points

Gothic Remake Learning Points are spent with a trainer and locked forever. Deus Ex hid its point of no return somewhere else entirely.

Gothic Remake Learning Points are the strictest currency in any role-playing game released this year. You cannot open a menu and assign them. Instead you walk to a specific person, hand over ore, and the choice locks for the rest of the run.

That sounds unusual until you look back at Deus Ex from 2000. Both games decided you should never be good at everything. However, they hid the moment of no return in completely different places, and that gap still shapes how each one feels 26 years apart.

Where Gothic Remake Learning Points Actually Go

Levelling supplies the points. Each level hands you a slice of maximum health and ten Learning Points. The experience behind it comes from killing things and finishing quests. Elixirs and a few one-off quest rewards can raise a stat directly, without a trainer. The Learning Points themselves still arrive through levelling.

Then the awkward part starts. There is no allocation screen at all. Every skill belongs to a named character who has to teach it to you, so improving your one-handed swing means tracking down the right trainer and standing in front of them. Most lessons also cost ore nuggets on top of the points, as TechRaptor’s trainer location guide sets out, which means the colony’s real currency runs straight through your character sheet.

And there is no respec. Once you spend a point, it never comes back. Some trainers will not even speak to you until you have joined their camp, so a build decision can quietly depend on a faction decision you made hours earlier.

Deus Ex Let You Spend Freely, Then Trapped You Elsewhere

Compared with Gothic Remake Learning Points, the 2000 classic looks generous. You start with 5,000 skill points, and you can pour them into skills from a menu whenever you like, including halfway through a mission. Nobody has to teach you anything.

The catch is where those points come from. Mission triggers award them, and most of those triggers line up with progressing or completing objectives rather than with killing things, according to the Skill Points page on the Deus Ex wiki. So the game pays you for curiosity and for finishing the job.

It is also tighter than it first appears. Roughly 34,000 points exist across the entire game by the wiki’s count, while mastering every skill would take somewhere near 87,000. As a result, you will finish specialised whether you planned to or not.

Meanwhile the real trap sits somewhere else entirely. Augmentations arrive inside canisters, you carry them to a medical bot, and each canister offers two augmentations but installs exactly one. Pick the leg upgrade and the alternative is gone for that playthrough. That is the same no-take-backs rule Gothic uses, except it hides inside an item rather than a conversation.

Two Ways to Make a Choice Hurt

Side by side, the contrast is clean. Gothic spreads the pain thinly across the whole game, because every improvement is an errand, a payment and a permanent commitment at the same time. Deus Ex instead concentrates the pain into a handful of sharp either-or moments, then lets you stay relaxed about everything else.

Both approaches do the same job. Neither game lets you become the complete character, so both stamp a personality onto your save file. Still, they feel opposite in the hand. Gothic Remake Learning Points make you feel poor. Deus Ex canisters make you feel decisive.

Can you respec Gothic Remake Learning Points?

No. The remake has no respec, so every point you spend is permanent for that playthrough. Commit to a weapon type early rather than sampling several.

Where do skill points actually come from in Deus Ex?

Mission triggers award them, and most of those triggers line up with progressing or completing objectives. So exploring carefully and finishing goals pays better than fighting everything you meet.
