Two 2D Metroidvanias, two hardest fights, and neither one sits in the main story. Sons of Sparta parks its toughest encounter behind a checklist of optional rooms. Hollow Knight did the same years earlier, though it asked for something very different in return.

Both gates keep the best fight away from casual players. Only one of them makes the gate itself worth playing.
How Sons of Sparta hides its real final boss
Mega Cat Studios built this one alongside Santa Monica Studio, who wrote the script, and it arrived on PlayStation 5 in February 2026 as a side-scrolling prequel about Kratos at the Agoge.
Its gold trophy, The Summit, needs three things from you. First, push the story until you have beaten Apate, the seventh main boss. Then clear every Muse Chamber. Only after that does returning to The Drifting Spire trigger anything.
What waits there is the Stymphalian Trio of Ioke, Ponea and Apate. That roster is the telling part, because Apate is a boss you already killed once. So the game brings her back with two companions rather than inventing something new, as Deltia’s boss rundown sets out.

Hollow Knight made the gate the challenge
Team Cherry took a harder line. Absolute Radiance sits at the peak of the Pantheon of Hallownest, and you reach it only after clearing every preceding trial in Godhome.
Crucially, that means fighting the whole gauntlet in one unbroken run. The final stretch throws Nightmare King Grimm at you, then the Pure Vessel, then the Radiance itself, with no chance to stop and regroup.
Players widely rate it the hardest fight in the game, partly because of its speed and overlapping patterns, but mostly because of the endurance needed simply to arrive, as the Hollow Knight wiki entry records. Even reaching the fight counts for something, since it unlocks the boss in the Hall of Gods for practice.
Why one gate lands and the other does not
The difference comes down to what each game asks you to prove. Hollow Knight’s gate is combat, so surviving it already demonstrates you belong in front of its final boss.
Sons of Sparta asks for exploration admin instead. Clearing Muse Chambers proves you looked around thoroughly, which is a fair thing to reward, yet it teaches you nothing about the fight ahead. Then the payoff recycles an opponent you have beaten.
That gap matters, because reviewers praised the writing and the 2D art while criticising exactly this side of the design. A borrowed structure shows its seams when the content behind it feels thinner than the walk there.

Frequently asked questions
Is the hidden boss in Sons of Sparta missable? No. You can return after the story, provided every Muse Chamber is clear.
Who fights you in the Trio? Ioke, Ponea and Apate, which means one of the three is a rematch.
Do you have to beat Absolute Radiance to unlock it? No. Simply reaching it in the Pantheon adds it to the Hall of Gods.
