Two more roles are reportedly changing hands on Amazon’s God of War series. God of War season 2 will bring in older actors for Atreus and Thrúd, according to a report from MP1st, replacing the pair who play them in the first season. Coming so soon after the reported Kratos recast, it could easily look like a production running into trouble. Look closer, though, and one of these recasts was always the plan.

What God of War season 2 is reportedly changing
Callum Vinson plays Atreus in the first season of the Prime Video show. Island Austin plays Thrúd, the daughter of Thor. New casting calls are now out for teenage versions of both characters.
The document for Atreus, still using the season one codename “Joshua”, describes a boy who grew up isolated in a cabin in the woods and then went on a dangerous journey with his father. It says that at journey’s end he found a revelation suggesting a destiny greater than he imagined. In season two he is “eager to learn more about the truth of who he is”, and his trusting nature “leaves him vulnerable to manipulation”. Applicants must be comfortable with physical combat, especially archery.
Thrúd’s call, codenamed “Ruth”, is blunter. She is “wise beyond her years” after an incident that changed her life, and her “tough exterior masks a childlike vulnerability” that turns cruel when she is hurt.
Why the Atreus recast was planned from the start
Most coverage has bundled this in with the Kratos situation. That is the wrong read, because the two have nothing to do with each other.
The Kratos recast is an accident. Deadline broke that story as an exclusive on 16 July, and The Hollywood Reporter followed the next morning, stating that the Prime Video lead tore a bicep muscle while performing a stunt. Production stopped, Amazon began looking for a replacement, and filming is due to resume in October.
The Atreus change is the opposite. It looks deliberate, and the evidence has been public for a year. When season one’s casting calls leaked, the notes called the Atreus role a “one-year series regular”. In other words, the production told applicants up front that the part lasted a single season. The production wrote that age jump into the plan before filming began.
That distinction matters for anyone judging the show’s health. One recast is bad luck. The other is a schedule working exactly as intended.
What the leaked God of War season 2 casting calls reveal
There is a quiet spoiler buried in Thrúd’s description. It says she “shares a special connection with her grandfather, the king”, and that she believes he will choose her as heir to the throne one day.
Anyone who has played the games will know which king that means, and what it tends to lead to. Combine that with an older Atreus chasing the truth about himself, and season two appears to be reaching into the material the second game covers.
