Forza Horizon 6 moves the series to Japan. Here is how it compares to Forza Horizon 5 on map, features, graphics, and value.

Forza Horizon 6 has arrived, and it trades the sun-baked hills of Mexico for the neon streets of Japan. That leaves a fair question for racing fans on a budget. Should you jump to the new game, or does Forza Horizon 5 still hold up? Both are excellent, but they aim at slightly different players. Here is a clear breakdown to help you choose.

What Forza Horizon 6 changes from Horizon 5

The headline change is the setting. Forza Horizon 5 took players across a stylized version of Mexico back in 2021. Forza Horizon 6 moves the festival to Japan, a location fans had requested for years. The new map runs from the dense grid of Tokyo to snowy mountain passes and a full ski resort.

The scale jumped too. Playground Games says Tokyo alone is about five times larger than the biggest built-up area in Horizon 5. The full map holds more than 670 roads, which makes it the biggest open world in the series so far. So Horizon 6 is not just a new coat of paint. It is a clear step up in size.

Availability differs as well. Forza Horizon 6 launched on May 19, 2026 for Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Xbox Cloud, with day-one Game Pass access. A PlayStation 5 version is also planned for later in 2026. Horizon 5 is older, cheaper, and now runs on Xbox, PC, and PS5 too.

The map, the world, and the new features

Meanwhile, Japan gives Horizon 6 a stronger sense of place than most racers manage. For example, you can drift down a quiet mountain road, then roll into a busy city district minutes later. That variety keeps long drives interesting.

In addition, the game adds systems built around car culture. For instance, three permanent Car Meet spots let you gather with real players, browse their rides, and grab custom liveries. A feature called the Estate hands you a mountain valley to build on freely. There is also the Journal, a stamp-collecting idea that records the landmarks you visit.

A new fog-of-war map hides the world until you explore it, which brings back that first-time thrill. Horizon 5 has none of these extras, though it still offers a huge, polished playground. So Horizon 6 wins on fresh ideas, while Horizon 5 wins on being a known, finished package.

Graphics and how each game feels

Both games look great, but Horizon 6 pulls ahead on lighting. It adds ray-traced global illumination for softer indirect light, plus ray-traced reflections. As a result, wet Tokyo streets and shiny car bodies show the difference most clearly.

Still, Horizon 5 holds up well for a 2021 title. Its world is bright, clean, and runs smoothly across a wide range of hardware. On an older machine, it may even feel like the safer pick. Horizon 6 asks for more power to look its best.

The driving feel stays close between the two. Both use the same arcade-friendly handling that made the series famous. So the choice really comes down to setting, features, and how much horsepower your system has.

Which one wins: Forza Horizon 6 or Horizon 5?

So if you want the newest and biggest experience, Forza Horizon 6 is the clear pick. Japan is a fantastic setting, the map is enormous, and the new social and building features add real depth. It is also on Game Pass, so many players can try it without a full purchase.

Horizon 5 is still a smart choice if you own it already or find it cheap. It runs on more modest hardware and offers dozens of hours on its own. For a first Forza Horizon, though, the newer game makes the stronger case.
