Capcom is bringing back one of the strangest loot systems it ever built. Dragon’s Dogma 2 relics arrive with the Dark Arisen expansion, and you appraise them to unlock new gear and skills. Anyone who played the 2013 version will feel a jolt of recognition. That game had a near identical idea, and it hid a trick most players never learned.

What Dragon’s Dogma 2 relics are for
The expansion opens up Norgan, a snowy region in the north. You hunt relics there, then appraise them to see what you actually found. Capcom confirmed the release in its own investor announcement, alongside twelve dungeon challenges and a pile of cosmetics. It lands on 9 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, Steam and Switch 2.
Capcom describes the appraisal system as inspired by the first Dark Arisen. So it is worth knowing exactly how that older system behaved, because it was never a plain slot machine. Dragon’s Dogma 2 relics may or may not carry the same quirk, and nobody outside Capcom knows yet.
Relic appraisal is not the only major addition either. Norgan brings twelve dungeon challenges of its own, plus new hairstyles and tattoos for anybody who spent the base game unhappy with their Arisen. Capcom framed the whole package as a way to broaden its audience, and the Switch 2 release is part of that push. So the expansion lands on a brand new platform and an old one at the same moment.
The 2013 version could be rigged, and most people never noticed
Bitterblack Isle dropped cursed items you simply could not use. You carried them to Olra and paid Rift Crystals to have them purified, and out came real equipment. Novelties, armour, weapons and gear each came in three tiers, and the better tiers cost far more. A level three cursed weapon ran to 28,800 crystals, while a level one novelty cost only 300.
Here is the part that mattered. Except for novelties, the result depended on the vocation of your Arisen and your main pawn at the exact moment of purification, as the community entry on the subject records. Change both of you to a warrior before handing the item over and the game leaned towards warrior gear.
So the gamble was partly steerable. Community testing also suggested that drop location fed into the result, and that your main pawn’s vocation still counted even when that pawn had died. Players who knew changed class before visiting Olra, while players who did not burned tens of thousands of crystals and blamed their luck.
What to do in the first week
That history is the reason to watch the new system carefully at launch. If appraisal reads any part of your build, the first week will decide whether the community finds it or spends a year complaining about drop rates. Either way, it may be worth holding your rarest relics back until people understand how the thing behaves.
