Divinity Original Sin Armour vs Pokemon Status Conditions

Divinity Original Sin armour blocks stuns until it breaks. Pokemon lets one status land, then rations it. Same problem, two fixes.

Divinity Original Sin armour, the two bar system that arrived in Original Sin 2, looks like a spare health bar. That is exactly why new players waste it. In truth it is a lock on crowd control. Pokemon guards against the very same nightmare, the enemy who stuns you forever, yet it picks a completely different lock.

How Divinity Original Sin Armour Blocks More Than Damage

Every character carries two separate bars, one physical and one magical. Both come mostly from the gear you wear rather than from your attributes.

Each bar soaks damage of its own type. More importantly, each bar also stops the disabling effects that ride along with that damage.

The split stays strict. Physical armour holds off effects such as knockdown and crippled. Magical armour holds off burning, poisoned, chilled and frozen, along with many other magical controls. So a fireball thrown at a full magical bar chips the bar and nothing more. The burning status will not apply until that bar reaches zero. The game’s mechanics wiki spells out both lists.

Only an ability with a piercing effect ignores the rule.

Follow that logic and the game’s most repeated advice explains itself. Split your party between physical and magical damage, and you strip two bars halfway, so no disable ever lands. Commit to one type instead, and you break a bar, then land everything at once.

Pokemon Rations Status Instead of Blocking It

Pokemon has no armour bar whatsoever. A sleep move works on a healthy Pokemon at full health, immediately.

The limit sits somewhere else entirely. Bulbapedia splits conditions into two families. Non volatile ones survive switching out and last until you heal them. Volatile ones fade once the battle ends.

In the mainline games that group is burn, freeze, paralysis, poison, bad poison and sleep. Legends Arceus swaps freeze for frostbite and sleep for drowsy. Then comes the rule that matters. In every game except Legends Arceus, a Pokemon cannot pick up a second non volatile condition while it already carries one.

Volatile effects behave differently, since confusion and its cousins stack on top quite happily.

That single slot creates a trick most players never use deliberately. Burn an enemy and, in most cases, nothing can then put it to sleep or paralyse it, because its one slot is already full. In other words, status becomes protection.

Earn the Stun, or Ration It

Both designs exist to prevent one disaster, where a side disables the other and simply never lets go.

Divinity makes you earn the disable. Strip the right bar first, and the entire toolkit opens in a single turn.

Pokemon hands you the disable instantly, then rations it. One big condition per target, and no second helping.

The punishment lands differently as well. Divinity Original Sin armour punishes indecision, because a mixed party achieves nothing. Pokemon punishes greed, because a second status move is simply thrown away. Coming from a newer party RPG? Frequently asked questions

Does anything bypass the two bars? Piercing damage does. Everything else must break the matching bar first.

Can a Pokemon carry two big conditions? Not outside Legends Arceus. Volatile effects such as confusion still stack on top, though.

Is burning an enemy ever a favour? Sometimes. While a burn lasts, in most cases nothing else can put that Pokemon to sleep or paralyse it.
