Darkest Dungeon Fire’s Edge brings new content to Red Hook Studios’ original gothic roguelike. Red Hook plans to launch the expansion on August 18, 2026. For many fans, that alone is a surprise. The first game seemed settled after years of sequel support. However, Red Hook now returns to the Hamlet with two familiar faces from Darkest Dungeon 2.
Red Hook adds the Duelist and the Runaway as the main heroes. The Runaway uses fire, stealth, and a poker to spread wildfire across enemy ranks. Meanwhile, the Duelist brings a stance-based style built around parries and counters. Both heroes also get new town event art. You can follow the series on the official Darkest Dungeon website.
Sequel heroes return to the original game

The move feels unusual because Red Hook sends content backward. Most studios carry ideas from an older game into a sequel. Instead, these sequel heroes must now fit the first game’s harsher systems. That means stress, afflictions, roster depth, and longer dungeon runs all matter again.
This work is not a simple copy. Darkest Dungeon 2 uses a tighter road-trip structure. The original, however, leans harder on attrition and team management. As a result, Red Hook must tune the Duelist and Runaway with care. Their skills need to feel useful without breaking the brutal balance players expect.
How the new heroes could change party builds

Longtime players already know the safest party choices. Heroes like the Vestal, Occultist, and Hellion have anchored runs for years. However, two new kits could shift old habits. For example, fire effects may help damage-over-time teams feel more flexible. The Duelist could also reward players who like precise turn planning.
Screenshots show the Runaway spreading wildfire between enemies. So deeper dungeons may gain new routes for pressure damage. That kind of build variety keeps older games alive. It also drives the same debate seen around games like Elden Ring.
What the expansion says about Red Hook’s plans
Darkest Dungeon Fire’s Edge also shows Red Hook’s priorities. The studio does not treat the first game as abandoned. Instead, it gives the original another reason to pull players back. That matters in a genre where follow-ups often replace older entries.
The community will likely stay divided, of course. Some players love the grim art, cruel fights, and constant risk. Others still dislike the grind and harsh luck swings. Still, few games linger in the mind like Darkest Dungeon. So this add-on gives that old tension new fuel.
Is The Fire’s Edge a free update or paid content?
Red Hook lists it as paid content with its own Steam page. So expect a paid add-on rather than a free patch. Red Hook has not shared full pricing yet.
Do I need Darkest Dungeon 2 to play it?
No. The Fire’s Edge works with the original game. The Duelist and Runaway started in the sequel, then Red Hook reworked them for the first title.
