Daenerys Targaryen and the Night King are finally returning to the world of Game of Thrones, but not in another HBO series. Game of Thrones War for Westeros brings both characters back as major playable leaders and lets fans change the story in ways the original show never allowed.
The new Gamescom gameplay trailer shows Daenerys leading her forces with dragons, while the Night King controls an army of the dead. The biggest surprise comes near the end, where the Night King sits on the Iron Throne, showing just how far players can change the future of Westeros.
Daenerys and Her Dragons Are Back
Daenerys plays a major role in War for Westeros as the leader of House Targaryen. Players can control her armies and use dragons to attack enemy forces from above, giving her faction one of the most powerful weapons in the game.
The new footage shows dragons flying over large battles and burning soldiers on the ground. That immediately makes House Targaryen feel different from the other factions, which rely more on normal armies and ground combat. Players will not have to follow Daenerys’ exact path from the TV series either. War for Westeros lets players make their own decisions, which means her story can end very differently from what fans watched on HBO.
That is one of the biggest ideas behind the game. Instead of repeating famous Game of Thrones events, players can create completely new outcomes and see what happens when different characters win.
Daenerys is not the only familiar face returning. Jon Snow, Robb Stark, Jaime Lannister and Tywin Lannister also appear as hero characters, while Ghost and Grey Wind join the Stark forces.
Each hero brings different abilities into battle, so they play a bigger role than normal soldiers. Players will need to decide when and where to use them if they want to turn a difficult battle around.
The Night King Can Finally Take the Iron Throne
The Night King may have the most interesting faction in the game. His army focuses on White Walkers and the dead, giving players a very different way to fight compared with the other houses.
One of his biggest powers lets him turn fallen enemies into new soldiers. That means losing troops against him can make his army even larger, creating a problem that gets worse the longer a battle continues.
This ability comes directly from what fans saw in Game of Thrones, but the strategy-game format gives players control over it. Instead of simply watching the Night King raise the dead, players can use that power to build a bigger army during a fight.
The trailer takes the idea even further by showing the Night King sitting on the Iron Throne. That scene never happened in the TV series, but War for Westeros lets players create exactly that kind of ending.
This is where the game becomes more interesting than a simple adaptation. Fans already know how Game of Thrones ended, but this time they can change major battles, save characters who originally died or help another faction take control of Westeros.
Players can choose between House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen and the White Walkers. Each faction has different units, heroes and ways to fight, which should make every campaign feel different.
The game also includes the usual parts of a real-time strategy title. Players will build bases, collect resources, create armies and fight for control of important areas while trying to defeat rival factions.
War for Westeros will support both single-player and multiplayer battles. That means players can change the story on their own or fight other people to see who can take control of the Seven Kingdoms.
PlaySide Studios also plans to hold a beta before launch. The developer has not shared a date yet, but more details should come before the game arrives. For longtime Game of Thrones fans, the biggest attraction may simply be seeing these characters return in a way that gives players control over their future.
