Balatro looks like poker, uses poker hands, and rewards none of the instincts that make you good at poker. That catches people out constantly. What Balatro for poker players actually keeps
The hand rankings survive intact. High Card, Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind, Straight Flush and Royal Flush all mean what you expect. So you never have to relearn what makes a hand.
Reading your own draw survives too. Counting outs, spotting when you are one card from a flush, knowing which discards keep the most options open: all of that helps. In fact your discard decisions are where poker experience pays off most, because you are still deciding which cards to keep and why.
That is roughly where the overlap ends.
The instinct that will cost you runs
In poker, a hand is worth what it is because of how rarely it appears. A Straight Flush beats a Pair because it almost never happens. Balatro throws that away. Every hand type has a level, and levelling a hand raises the chips and multiplier it scores. Therefore value comes from investment, not rarity.
Follow that through and it gets strange. A Pair you have levelled repeatedly will out-score a Straight Flush you have never played once. Because of that, the strongest runs usually commit to one humble hand and feed it all game. Poker players tend to do the opposite. They see a Flush forming and chase it, then wonder why the score bar barely moved.
There is no opponent either. Nobody is bluffing, nobody folds, and there is nothing to read. Your only opponent is a score target. So concepts like position, pot odds and table image simply have nothing to attach to.
The rules bend, and that is the point
Balatro also breaks the deck itself. You can add cards, duplicate them and change their suits and ranks, so you are not working from a fixed 52. Keeping four aces around is a legitimate plan rather than cheating.
That unlocks hands poker does not have. Five of a Kind and Flush House both exist here, reachable once you have added or altered enough cards. Meanwhile Jokers rewrite the rules outright. Four Fingers, for example, lets Straights and Flushes count with four cards, so a Straight Flush can legally include a card of the wrong suit.
One ranking rule still bites. A higher tier hand always takes precedence over a lower one, whatever their levels are. So if you have poured everything into Pair and you accidentally play five cards that form Two Pair, the game scores Two Pair. Watch what you actually select, not what you meant to select.
How to unlearn poker in one run
Start your next run with three rules. First, pick a cheap hand early, usually Pair or Two Pair, and level it whenever you get the chance. Second, treat Jokers as the real deck and your cards as fuel, because scoring comes mostly from what your Jokers do to a hand. Third, discard far more aggressively than poker taught you, since there is no cost in chips and no opponent watching.
