Sony Just Dropped a New PS5 Update, but the Patch Notes Are Surprisingly Small

The PS5 October update brings security fixes and improvements to system performance and stability. Sony lists the software as version 26.06-14.10.00. However, its patch notes do not announce new menu features or explain which security problems the update addresses.

That makes this a smaller release than the previous version. Sony’s official notes provide a short list of changes, rather than a new feature breakdown. The useful detail is the version number, so players can check which update they are reading about.

Meanwhile, October also brings new games and subscription offers. Star Wars Galactic Racer has earned a strong early review score ahead of its October 6 launch. Those game announcements are separate from what this console update changes.

What the PS5 October update actually changes

Sony names two areas: security fixes, and better system software performance and stability. It does not identify individual bugs, explain the security fixes or promise higher frame rates in particular games.

Therefore, players should not treat this as confirmation that a specific game problem has disappeared. The Witcher 3 Remastered has prompted a separate discussion about quiet dialogue. Sony’s notes do not name that issue or say this update fixes it.

The previous version, 26.06-14.00.00, had more visible changes. It added an indicator showing who is speaking during voice chat. It also added the Community Activity widget to the Welcome Hub, with views for trending multiplayer games and popular games in your region.

However, those features belong to the earlier version. Finding them after installing this update does not mean Sony introduced them in 14.10.00.

To check for the PS5 October update manually, open Settings, then System. Choose System Software, followed by System Software Update and Settings. If a newer version is available, select Update System Software and follow the console’s instructions.

Sony warns players not to turn off the console during installation. Also, use its official update files if you need the USB method. Reinstalling the whole system is different from updating it and deletes console data.

Spider-Man avatars are a separate October bonus

The supporting news concerns profile pictures, not another console feature. Sony’s September 30 announcement confirms a limited-time Spider-Man: Brand New Day avatar offer through Sony Pictures Core, starting October 6.

PS Plus members can claim the avatars inside the app at no extra cost. Non-members must get the movie through Sony Pictures Core to receive them. The promotion ends October 20, 2026, and only applies in regions where the app is available.

October’s PS Plus games also give subscribers a separate lineup to claim. Neither those games nor the avatars appear in the system update’s patch notes.

For players, the distinction is simple: the update maintains the console’s software, while the avatar offer changes a profile picture. A Spider-Man download headline does not mean Sony is giving away a Spider-Man game.
