The Xbox Kojima PHYSINT deal may be one of Microsoft’s most surprising wins over PlayStation this year. Sony has officially walked away from Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, and Xbox has now stepped in to publish the project instead.
That is a huge change for a game originally introduced through PlayStation. PHYSINT was announced at Sony’s State of Play in January 2024 as Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre, making the sudden switch to Xbox difficult to ignore.
PlayStation Dropped PHYSINT Before Xbox Stepped In
PlayStation confirmed that it had made the decision to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT. Sony said it still admires Kojima’s vision and expects its long relationship with the developer to continue in other ways.
Kojima’s own explanation revealed that the decision actually happened months earlier. He said Kojima Productions unexpectedly received notice in mid-June that PlayStation wanted to cancel the PHYSINT project.
An update from PlayStation Studios: After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game.
Our relationship…

For Kojima Productions, however, abandoning the game was apparently not an option. Kojima said PHYSINT remained an important project for both himself and the studio, so the team spent roughly three months searching for a new partner that could help keep development alive. That search eventually led back to Xbox.
Microsoft has now officially announced that its existing relationship with Kojima Productions is expanding beyond OD. Xbox will publish PHYSINT, while the two companies also plan to work together on film and television projects.
Xbox Turns Sony’s Exit Into a Big Opportunity
From a rivalry point of view, this is difficult to see as anything other than a major PR win for Xbox. Microsoft did not simply announce another Kojima collaboration. It picked up a project that was previously closely associated with PlayStation and one of Sony’s longest-running creative relationships.
Kojima and PlayStation go back decades, particularly through Metal Gear and later Death Stranding. That history makes PHYSINT moving under Xbox publishing much more surprising than a normal publisher change.

Xbox already had Kojima Productions working on OD, its unusual horror project. Adding PHYSINT means Microsoft is now working with Kojima on two separate major games, including the title that marks his return to the genre that helped make his name.
Kojima said Xbox shares Kojima Productions’ “vision for the future,” while Xbox said it is honored to support his ambition with PHYSINT.
For Xbox, that is a strong name to have attached to its future lineup. For PlayStation, it raises an obvious question about why Sony decided the project was no longer worth pursuing.
We Still Don’t Know Why Sony Walked Away
That answer has not been publicly explained. Fans are already speculating about budgets, development time, physical releases and PC strategy, but none of those explanations have been confirmed by Sony, Microsoft or Kojima Productions. Until someone involved explains what happened behind the scenes, they should remain theories.
There is also no confirmed final platform list for PHYSINT under the new agreement. Xbox is publishing the game, but Microsoft has not yet announced whether it will be exclusive to Xbox consoles or exactly where it will release.
What is confirmed is dramatic enough. PlayStation chose to leave one of Kojima’s biggest upcoming projects, Kojima refused to let it die, and Xbox stepped in to keep it moving.
For Microsoft, that makes the Xbox Kojima PHYSINT deal much more than another publishing announcement. It is a high-profile project Xbox managed to gain after one of its biggest rivals decided to walk away.
