Witcher 3 Remastered Launches Free With a Skill Reset

Witcher 3 Remastered Launches Free With a Skill Reset

Witcher 3 Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for existing owners. However, returning players should check more than the new graphics. The update resets Geralt’s skill points because it changes how his skill tree works.

CD Projekt Red confirmed the release in its launch announcement. The remaster brings the 2015 role-playing game to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. It also includes both of the original expansions.

That gives the launch a different focus from the debate over its graphics. Better lighting and sharper scenery are part of the package, but players returning to an old save also have changes to learn.

Who Gets Witcher 3 Remastered for Free?

The free upgrade applies within the same platform family. Owning a copy on one system does not mean getting another copy on every system. Original Switch owners can upgrade on Switch 2, while PC owners can use GOG, Steam or the Epic Games Store.

Physical and digital copies qualify under the platform rules. Meanwhile, the remaster is also available to buy on Battle.net and the Microsoft Store, with Xbox Play Anywhere support on the latter. Check which copy you own before buying anything again.

The package includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, even for players who previously owned only the base game. This matters if you finished Geralt’s main story but never bought either expansion. The upgrade gives those players more to explore beyond the visual changes.

However, the separate expansion, Songs of the Past, is not part of that free offer. CD Projekt Red announced the remaster on August 25 and described Songs of the Past as paid content planned for 2027. Those are two different releases.

Check Your Skills Before Returning to Combat

The official patch notes explain why skill points reset. Skills now have three ranks, and later abilities depend on unlocking earlier ones. Before taking an old save into a difficult fight, open the skill menu and rebuild your setup.

There are smaller changes too. Reforge lets Yoana and Hattori change gear’s appearance without changing its stats. You unlock looks by collecting gear and crafting diagrams. Meanwhile, players can group nearby loot together, and Geralt can gather items while riding Roach.

PC players should also check the revised system requirements and update their graphics drivers. Path tracing is one of the PC additions, but a new setting does not mean every computer can run it comfortably.

For parents, a free upgrade is still worth checking like any other game purchase. A lower price says nothing about whether a game’s content suits a younger player.

The useful first step for returning players is simple: check the upgrade on your platform, then check Geralt’s skills. New scenery can wait until your build is ready.
