The Marvel Wolverine Character Design debate is getting louder just days before Insomniac’s PS5 exclusive arrives. PlayStation released the game’s launch trailer during State of Play, but instead of everyone talking about Logan’s brutal combat and the Sentinel threat, some players quickly turned their attention to the way several Marvel characters look.
Jean Grey, Mystique and Lady Deathstrike are at the center of the discussion. Some fans do not like Insomniac’s versions of the characters, while others argue that the studio is simply creating its own Marvel universe instead of copying the comics or movies.
The Launch Trailer Started the Debate Again
The new launch trailer gives Wolverine one of his final showcases before release on September 15. Logan fights Sentinels, tears through enemies and joins other mutants as Bolivar Trask’s campaign against mutantkind grows more dangerous. Jean Grey and members of Team X also appear throughout the footage.

The action itself has received plenty of positive attention. Wolverine looks fast, violent and much heavier than Spider-Man, which fits the character Insomniac is trying to create.
But screenshots from the trailer quickly started spreading separately from the action. Some posts compared Jean Grey, Mystique and Lady Deathstrike with older comic book versions of the characters. Others compared them with female characters from previous Insomniac games.
That turned character design into one of the biggest conversations surrounding the trailer.
Jean Grey and Mystique Are Getting Most of the Attention
Jean Grey has been part of this discussion since Insomniac first revealed her earlier this year. The studio has given Jean a grounded appearance with practical clothing and a more realistic facial design instead of trying to recreate one specific comic version. Some players like that direction. Others argue that she does not immediately look like the Jean Grey they recognize from Marvel comics, cartoons or movies.
I truly feel sorry for my fellow character artists that had to work on these ugly ass characters for Insomniac's Wolverine. It feels like none of the people in charge ever seen a god damn marvel comic book in their life….it's just sad. pic.twitter.com/XCvMMEafU6

Mystique is facing similar criticism. Insomniac’s Mystique keeps the blue skin and red hair that make the character recognizable, but her face and clothing follow the more realistic style used throughout Wolverine. Lady Deathstrike has also entered the debate, with some players questioning her facial design and how different she looks from other versions of the villain.
These reactions are clearly visible online, but they should not be treated as the opinion of every Wolverine fan. Plenty of players are much more interested in the combat, story and mutant characters finally appearing together in a major PlayStation game.
Insomniac Is Not Trying to Copy the Movies
One thing often gets lost when screenshots start spreading on social media. Marvel’s Wolverine is its own version of the Marvel universe. Insomniac is not recreating Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine films, the old X-Men movies or one particular comic series. The studio has already changed relationships and parts of the wider mutant world for its story.
Logan was previously part of Team X alongside characters including Mystique and Sabretooth. Jean Grey has her own place in this world, while Trask serves as one of the major threats facing mutants.
That gives Insomniac freedom to redesign these characters. It also means players who have a very specific image of Jean, Mystique or Deathstrike may not immediately connect with the new versions. That is where much of the current argument seems to come from.
This Happened With Spider-Man Too
Insomniac is no stranger to arguments about faces. Its Spider-Man games created similar debates, especially when Peter Parker received a different facial model in the remastered version of the first game.
How generous. Anything other than Insomniac actively and deliberately downgrading not only the women this time but emasculating Wolverine. Concord Devs? nbd. Sweet Baby? nbd. Just incompetence. The jaws just happen to be big and chest just happen to be flat. It's overt. Mary Jane https://t.co/XzfawTFZeW pic.twitter.com/2mRtSnQ9t8

Mary Jane and other characters also became frequent subjects of online comparisons after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Now Wolverine is going through something similar before release.
The difference is that Wolverine introduces a much larger group of mutant characters, many of whom already have decades of famous comic, movie and animated designs. Every new interpretation will be compared with something. That makes pleasing everyone almost impossible.
The Full Game Will Matter More Than Screenshots
There is also a problem with judging character design entirely from carefully selected images. A character can look very different during a conversation, action scene or cinematic compared with one paused frame from a trailer.
Insomniac’s characters also need to work inside the same realistic world as Logan. The studio has built Wolverine as a darker and more grounded adventure than Spider-Man. The environments, violence and character models all follow that direction.
Whether those designs actually work will become much easier to judge once players experience the entire story. And Wolverine has much more riding on it than character faces.
Insomniac has built a single-player, story-driven adventure that moves through Canada, Japan and Madripoor. Logan is the only playable character, but Jean Grey, Mystique, Sabretooth and other mutants can fight alongside him during parts of the journey.
The combat focuses on aggressive close-range attacks, parries, Rage abilities and Wolverine’s healing factor, with much more violence than Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. That is ultimately what players will spend most of their time experiencing.
For now, however, the launch trailer has created one final argument before release. Some fans love the darker world and brutal combat. Others cannot stop talking about the faces. Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026 exclusively for PS5 and is PS5 Pro Enhanced.
