The Marvel’s Wolverine player reviews tell a very different story from the clips dominating social media. Since launch, one side has been sharing bad-looking water, automated-looking sequences and complaints about handholding, while another says those clips are being used to make the entire game look worse than it really is.
I went through the biggest Reddit discussions I could find, along with ResetEra, NeoGAF, PlayStation Store ratings and technical analysis. Steam is not useful here because Marvel’s Wolverine is currently a PS5 exclusive and has no Steam community page.
The Backlash Is Real, but So Is the Pushback
The most viral example is the water clip posted on September 16, which compared one shallow section to “N64 graphics.” That criticism spread quickly, and it joined older complaints about basic QTEs, guided scent trails, linear levels and sections that appear to keep moving even when the player does very little.
Those complaints are not invented. The same issues come up repeatedly in Reddit’s official PS5 discussion and ResetEra’s review thread. Some players who actually finished the game also say the combat becomes repetitive and that the QTEs feel unnecessary.

But the opposite side is just as easy to find. PS5 Pro players have praised the lighting, image quality, smooth performance and Japan levels. One completion thread called it one of the most polished games the poster had played all year, while others said the online hate felt wildly exaggerated.
Digital Foundry’s technical review also makes the “this whole game looks terrible” argument harder to defend. Its analysis praised the high-fidelity visuals, ray-traced reflections, environmental destruction and stable performance, even while noting weaker lighting in some areas.
The Hard Numbers Do Not Look Like a Hated Game
The strongest reality check comes from people who actually bought the game. At the time I checked, Marvel’s Wolverine had a 4.84 out of 5 rating from 17,852 PlayStation Store ratings. Around 92% were five-star ratings and another 5% were four-star.
That does not prove the game is perfect. Store ratings naturally attract fans, and someone can rate a game before finishing it. But it makes the idea that players broadly hate Wolverine difficult to support.

My read after going through both camps is that Wolverine has become an algorithm-friendly punching bag. There are legitimate weaknesses here, especially the handholding, QTE design and some uneven environmental details. The water clip is not fake just because other water scenes look better.
But taking the ugliest 10 seconds of a 14-hour game and presenting it as proof that Insomniac delivered an N64-looking disaster is equally misleading. The internet is currently arguing over two different Wolverines: the game shown in viral clips, and the one thousands of PS5 owners are actually rating very highly.
